The story is about a road, a very unusual one, built in time of a brutal war to aid the survival of the Chinese nation from the onslaught of the Japanese invasion. But it isn't a story about engineering or the art of the builders. Nor is it a story about the amazing geography, the mountains, and the lowlands the road traverses. More specifically, it is a story about what Nicol Smith sees, hears, and experiences both on his way to the road and on the road.
